The Zero to One of Latin America’s Largest Payment Network: Tomás Mindlin, tapi

Listen On

Fintech is the most mature startup segment in Latin America.
But we still have a long way to go.

Tomás Mindlin had an insight — companies that scale their user base need a payment network that can walk alongside them.

And that’s how tapi was born.

In just three years, the Buenos Aires-born fintech became the largest payment network in Spanish-speaking Latin America. A year ago, it raised a $22M Series A round, led by Kaszek and Andreessen Horowitz (a16z).

At Latitud Ventures, we have partnered with tapi since their seed round three years ago. tapi now connects financial institutions to more than 60 thousand billers across Hispanic LatAm. Every month, it processes tens of millions of payments. If you’ve used Nubank, Mercado Pago, Stori, or Ualá, you probably used tapi without even knowing it.

In this episode, you’ll hear:

— What Tomás is building at tapi in a few words, and how we still have a long way to go in LatAm fintech;

— How tapi’s thesis was born, based on the learnings from Tomas’ first fintech;

— The opportunities that still lie in B2B, B2B, and B2B2C fintech;

— Advice to founders on getting your foot in the door of enterprises;

— How tapi sees payments across different LatAm markets;

— How tapi prioritizes markets and strategies in its cross-LatAm approach;

— And the pieces of advice Tomás would share with other founders in terms of building, expanding, and fundraising.
